Questions, bugs and ideas go straight to Daniel. Please include your device, its software version, and NeonMood's version (INFO → VERSION).
Getting started
- Read the BEFORE WE SCAN notice, tap I UNDERSTAND — START SCANNER, and allow camera access.
- Face the camera in good, even light. The hologram and expression bars follow your face straight away.
- Tap CALIBRATE and hold a relaxed face for a few seconds, so a resting frown isn't read as an expression.
- Optional: TEACH walks you through nine short prompts (about two minutes) so NeonMood learns how your face makes each expression.
- Tap LOG MOOD to save a reading, and HISTORY to see your log as charts.
Questions
Which devices does NeonMood work on?
Any iPad that runs iPadOS 26. It's also available as an iPad app on Apple silicon Macs and on Apple Vision Pro. iPads with Face ID use ARKit face tracking and give the most precise readings. Other iPads, Macs and Apple Vision Pro use a 2-D landmark fallback, which is less precise.
The label seems wrong.
NeonMood estimates facial expression, not emotion. A frown can just mean concentration, and lighting, glasses, facial hair and head angle all matter. Try CALIBRATE, then TEACH, and use WRONG? to tell it what your expression actually was. Consistent corrections gently adjust future readings, and you can undo them with RESET PERSONAL TUNING.
It just says READING…
No expression clearly leads, so NeonMood doesn't guess. When two expressions are close (for example surprised and afraid), it shows both.
I said no to camera access.
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and turn on NeonMood (on a Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera). If camera access is managed by Screen Time or by your organization, whoever manages the device can allow it.
It says “No compatible face sensor”.
NeonMood couldn't find a camera it can use, for example on a Mac without a built-in or connected camera. Connect a camera, then open NeonMood again.
How do I delete my data?
In History, swipe to delete an entry or use PURGE ALL. In INFO, use CLEAR CALIBRATION and RESET PERSONAL TUNING. Deleting the app deletes everything.
Can I sync or export my log?
Not in this version. Your data never leaves your device.
Is this a medical or mental-health tool?
No. NeonMood is a playful readout of your facial expression, for you to use on yourself. It doesn't diagnose anything and isn't for assessing other people. If you're struggling, talk to a person you trust or a professional.
Privacy
NeonMood runs entirely on your device: no network code, no accounts, no analytics and no tracking, and the camera image is never saved. Read the NeonMood privacy policy.
