NeonMood
Your face as a neon hologram.
Point your iPad's front camera at yourself and NeonMood turns your face into a live cyberpunk “expression scanner”: a glowing wireframe that follows every movement, with a playful readout of your facial expression. It all runs on your device, and nothing is ever uploaded.

Illustration of the readout: the label says HAPPY with a CLEAR reading, and the happy bar is the longest of the seven.
Why you'll like it
A hologram of your face
A glowing wireframe follows every movement, with seven expression bars and a valence/arousal plot that traces your readings over time.
Tuned to your face
Calibrate to your relaxed face, teach it your expressions in about two minutes, and tap WRONG? when a reading misses.
Private by design
Everything runs on your device. NeonMood has no network code, and the camera image is never saved.
The details
What's inside, where it runs, and what happens to your data.
Features
- A live neon wireframe hologram of your face
- Seven expression bars: neutral, happy, sad, surprised, afraid, angry and disgusted
- A valence/arousal plot, and a label that says how clear the reading is and which facial muscle movements drove it
- CALIBRATE to your relaxed face, so a resting frown isn't read as anger
- TEACH: nine short prompts, about two minutes, so NeonMood learns how your face makes each expression
- WRONG? lets you say what your expression really was; consistent corrections gently adjust future readings, within limits
- A private mood log with charts; correct, delete or purge entries any time
Works on
- iPad
- Mac
- Apple Vision Pro
Made for iPad (iPadOS 26 or later). iPads with Face ID use face tracking and give the most precise readings, best in good light. Other iPads, Apple silicon Macs and Apple Vision Pro run it as an iPad app without face tracking, using a 2-D facial landmark fallback that is less precise.
Honest about what it is
NeonMood estimates facial expression, not emotion. A frown can just mean concentration. It's a playful readout for you to enjoy on yourself, not a medical or psychological tool, and not for assessing other people.
Privacy
The app collects no data. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party code. Camera images, video and face data are never saved or sent anywhere. Your mood log, calibration and personal tuning stay on your device, and you can delete them in the app.

Can I download NeonMood yet?
Not yet. NeonMood is coming soon to the App Store. Sign up for updates to hear the moment it's live.
Does it know how I feel?
No. NeonMood reads how your facial muscles move and shows which expression your face resembles. Expressions don't reliably show how someone feels, so treat it as a playful readout, not a judgment.
Does it work on my Mac or Apple Vision Pro?
Yes, as an iPad app. Macs and Apple Vision Pro don't have face tracking, so NeonMood uses a 2-D facial landmark fallback with the camera the system provides. It works, but readings are less precise than on an iPad with Face ID.
Do I need an account or an internet connection?
No. There's no account, and NeonMood contains no network code, so it works the same offline.
How much does it cost?
NeonMood will be free, with no ads.
